Looking back on 2011

I thought I would share with you a few of my favourite shots from 2011 as well as give a little wrap up. After my travels last year this year was bound to be a quietyear in comparison, which is not to say that it was a bad year.

Here a few of my highlights for 2011:

In February, saw the arrival of my little niece, who I absolutely adore.
In April, we had a super long weekend and the boyfriend andI took a trip up to Sydney and explored the city, Blue Mountains and HunterValley.
In June, my boyfriend and I celebrated 2 years together witha weekend away in the Dandenongs. Also attended my 10 year high school reunion(it’s crazy how fast time has flown by).
In October, I (finally) graduated from my undergraduatedegree, which was a great achievement for me. I also made a pretty major decision(well it was definitely a big decision for me personally anyway).
In December, I had a great Birthday/Christmas surrounded by people I love, you really can't ask for more.

Looking back on last year’s list of things I wanted to do in2011. I think I achieved everything I wanted for 2011 but I am lookingforward to the big new changes 2012 will bring.

Happy New Year and I hope 2012 is everything you hope it to be.

Pentax MZ-50, also known as the Pentax ZX-50, is a K-mount autofocus SLR produced by Pentax in 1997. Ideal for those who are new to SLR photography.

The Pentax MZ-50 was my first real camera. I remember saving for ages to purchase an SLR and although this was not my first choice (I had my heart set on another, I can’t remember what now) it was my prized possession for a long time. I had many adventures with this camera, which had been neglected. That was until recently when I rediscovered the beauty of this camera.

The Pentax MZ-50 is compact and light weight autofocus SLR and back in the 90’s it was said to have had a “broad range of advanced technologies”. The MZ-50 has some issues with the autofocus, which seems to be a common fault with this camera. The main problem is when using the autofocus mode it has some trouble focusing properly, however this could simply be fixed by switching to the manual focus option.

Putting the issues with the autofocus aside.

When it comes to the photos that are produced with this camera, I have always been quite impressed with the results. The MZ-50 takes the standard 35mm film and through experimenting with different films I have found it be a versatile camera.

The MZ-50 is a great camera for those who are starting out with a film SLR. It is functional and uncomplicated making it easy to use for beginners. Another added bonus is these days you can pick one up online for around $20.

Camera Comparison

The first shot was taken with my Superheadz and the second with my Pentax MZ-50. I have to say they both have qualities I really like. The Superheadz photo was taken through a car window while moving so I think that the photo turned out pretty well considering. But I really I like how the colours translated in the Pentax shot.

Herb garden in progress

The boy and I finally got motivated to start our own herb garden recently. This has long been something I wanted to do. The photos above were taken on the day we planted them. We planted basil, oregano, thyme, coriander and rosemary. Along with chilli, mint and tomatoes. A few weeks have past, they are all growing quite nicely and its also been nice to use them in the kitchen as well.

Have you had a go at planting a herb garden? How did it turn out? I would love to hear any trips you have.

Sydney Opera House: Diana Mini

I was happy the weather was really great on this trip because I managed to get some nice shots and explore the Harbour, including the Opera House, a little bit more.

Lomography Article: Cockatoo Island: An Island in the Harbour

Historical buildings with Sydney Harbour as the backdrop. CockatooIsland is a great place for all Lomo enthusiasts. So if you ever find yourself in Sydney looking for something to do, jump on a ferry, and head to this island in the harbour.

Last month my boyfriend and I went to Sydney for the weekend and were looking for a new place to visit. We ended up jumping on a ferry and headed across to Cockatoo Island to take in the history and take some photos.

Cockatoo Island is an island located in Sydney Harbour. In its past life it has been a former imperial prison, industrial school, and one of Australia’s biggest shipyards in the 20th century. These days, it is open to the public to explore and learn about the hidden secrets of the island.

The historical buildings and structures made for some great photographic subjects. On the day we visited, I went armed with my Diana Mini and Superheadz Ultra Wide & Slim. It was great to see the island from the two camera's perspectives.

If you ever find yourself in Sydney and you are looking for something to do you should definitely take a ride over to Cockatoo Island. If you want further information you can visit www.cockatooisland.gov.au.

Melbourne Laneways Part 1

Recently I went on a photo adventure with my boyfriend and a couple of other people. Our little adventure took us through the laneways of Melbourne. For those not familiar with Melbourne, our laneways are well known for hidden bars and street art. I really like the first two shots, the first one, in particular, you can see the collaboration between different artists, which I think is great.

There always seems to be debate surrounding street art. What do you think of street art? Is it graffiti or art?

Cupcakes

I have actually decided that I am going to do a regular themed post based on the recipes I like. I remember making cupcakes when I was little with my Mum, which used to be quite fun. My friend at work loves making cupcakes and she really is a talented baker. She has actually inspired my first "grown up" attempt at making cupcakes, which I made for my sister's birthday. I made two batches one were vanilla and the second were chocolate. I used Nutella icing on both, which was delicious (just beats eating nutella straight out of the jar). I have to say they turned out better than I expected. However, I do believe I have a long way to go with my cake decorating skills.

If you were interested I used my friend's adapted version of Nigella's Cupcake Recipe.

Here is the recipe for the Nutella Icing

Ingredients

About 40g Butter

2/3 - 1/2 cup of Nutella

1 cup of Pure Icing Sugar

1 tbl milk

Combine butter and nutella. Mix in the milk and icing sugar until the icing sugar is combined.

Baking Goodness

I have been doing quite alot of baking lately. I don't know what's come over me really. But anyway I think I may start sharing some recipes here. The first one is Lemon Slice because it is oh so easy.

Lemon Slice
Recipe from Taste (however I did change it slightly)
Makes 12

Ingredients
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
100g butter
200g Granita biscuits (any wheat biscuits work)
1 cup desiccated coconut
1 lemon, rind finely grated

Lemon Icing
2 cups icing sugar mixture (I would recommend using less)
40g butter, softened
1 lemon, juiced

Method

Grease and line a 3cm-deep, 15.5cm x 25cm (base) slab pan. Place condensed milk and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 4 to 5 minutes or until butter melts.
Place biscuits in a food processor and process to fine crumbs. Combine crumbs, coconut and 2 teaspoons lemon rind in a bowl. Add hot butter mixture. Stir until well combined.
Press biscuit mixture into prepared pan. Refrigerate for 1 1/2 hours or until firm.
Make lemon icing: Place icing sugar mixture, butter and 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice in a bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. Spread icing over slice. Refrigerate for a further 30 minutes or until icing has set. Cut into pieces. Serve

I added lemon juice to the base which made a little bit more tangy. I have made this a couple of times recently and here are 2 suggestions I have. The second time I made this I added a teaspoon of vanilla essence to the icing and I also didn't use as much icing sugar. I think the icing turned out a lot better.

I am always looking for recipes to try (or just drool over). So if you have any recipes suggestions please let me know. I would be happy to hear them.

Learning a new skill

So about eighteen months I received a sewing machine for Christmas, which you can read about here. Until recently, I hadn't made much progress in the way of developing my sewing skills. But then I stumbled upon an e-course run by the girls at Red Velvet. I have now successfully completed the first project, which was making a cute little bow. I am now looking forward to making a start on the next project.

With a little luck and a whole lot of patience I may just be able to revisit making that dress I attempted eighteen months ago.

Shadows that criss cross

This photo was taken on a few weeks ago while we went for a walk around our local neighbourhood. I liked how the frame of the bridge formed criss cross shadows on the steps.

Cross Birds

These are the first photos I wanted to share with you from my first attempt at cross processing. I think the first shot is by far my favourite from the roll.

Overall I am pretty happy with the results. In case you were interested the film I used was Rollei Creative Edition Crossbird.

A little film of surprise

I recently found a roll of undeveloped film in my camera bag. I had no idea what was on it but I had it developed anyway. I was surprised because there were a few shots on the roll that I really liked. It also made me realise how much I love my first film SLR, a Pentax MZ-50.

I got the Pentax camera when I was 16 and it was my prized possession for a long time. As I had to save for ages to get it. I haven't used it much as of late but I think that is going to change. I have some more photos that I have taken with this camera and I have to say I loved the results. So you may need to watch this space as it were.

I don't know about you but I am sure glad Friday is on its way. I have a little camera adventure planned for this weekend so I can finish my roll for the "It's a Photo Swap 2011". If you are interesting in having a look the first photos to be developed are up now on flickr.

Trip to IKEA

Last weekend we took a trip to IKEA and picked up bedside tables, draws and a long narrow table (which is perfect to display my growing collection of cameras :p). For the most part the assembling was pretty easy (with the exception of the chest of drawers). The thing I like most about IKEA is that their designs are clean and simple. Another things is putting everything together makes you feel like you have played apart in creating it.

I started my blog in 2009 but like I have mentioned in my about section it really has been until the last few months that I have actually given it a bit more of my love and attention. I just realised that today is my blog's second birthday (birthday I am not sure is that what you would call it?). Here's a look back at what was happening on my blog a year ago and two years ago:

Little Queue Freshen up

So I have had a bit of a play around with my blog template and header. I have been wanting to give little queue a bit of a freshen up for awhile now. There are still a few changes I am planning to make and I have a couple of different ideas for the header but for now I am happy. If anyone has any suggestions or tips I would be happy to hear them.

Much Love #3 - Weekends away

I much love weekends away. So last week my boy and I celebrated our two year anniversary. So we decided to go away for the weekend. We booked ourselves into a cottage , which was really lovely and also very relaxing.

In other news, I am experimenting with Rollei Crossbird film. I am half way through the film and I am really excited to see the results. I have never used cross processed film before.

Black and White Diana F+

So I have managed to sort through my first couple of rolls from my Diana F+. It was definitely a bit of a learning curve as it is the first time I have used medium format. I did learn a very valuable lesson on the second roll of film. That being to make sure I have having the lens cap off (oops! hehe). These are a couple of my favourites black and white shots. I particular like the way the first image turned out.

One day left of work before a very long weekend and I can't wait! Just quietly I think this weekend I will get plenty of opportunities for some photo adventures.

First roll from Diana Mini (Part 1)

This was the only photo I had to edit . The original one was a little to over exposed.

I have finally got around to posting my first roll from my Diana Mini. I have also decided that it may be worth while to post it in two parts. I plan to post the second part later in the week or by the start of next week so stay tuned.

These particular ones were taken back in February when my boyfriend and I had taken a trip down to Torquay.

Overall I am pretty happy with how they turned out. Although there were a couple of the photos that did come out over exposed that is part of the fun of film. You never know what you have got until you get developed.

I had planned to post these photos last Thursday but I didn't have a chance. So "Photo a Day for March" has now finished and as promised here are the remaining photos.

Looking back over the month I think I managed to get some good shots it also helped me to get my creativity flowing a little bit too. I have a couple of plans for little projects coming up.

March also saw the start of a new phase for my blog. I decided to make it a dot com and hopefully soon you will see some changes to the layout and design of the blog.

At the moment I am loving taking photos with my diana mini and falling for film again. I still need to upload some of my shots from the first roll, so hopefully I get a chance this week.

A collection of happenings

A collection of my photos for "photo a day March". I went down to Phillip Island for the weekend with some friends. They all had a learn to surf lesson as I am not a very confident swimmer I decided it would be best for me to look on from the comfort of the beach. It was a great weekend relaxing by the water and taking in a couple of games of uno.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I recently had film developed from my Diana Mini. I also had my first roll from my Olympus Pen EES-2 camera. I picked this up a little while ago on ebay and I was attracted to it because it takes half frame shots, which I think makes for some interesting results.

I thought I would share some of my favourites from my first attempt. I hope you enjoy them. I still need to sort through my photos from my Diana Mini, so I think I will be posting those sometime over the weekend.

Tuesday = Monday x 2

I love long weekends but one downfall to a long weekend is that Tuesday feel like Monday x 2. So yesterday I had a pretty relaxing morning and then went out with the bf for photography related shopping trip. We purchased a film scanner, so I am pretty excited about being able to share my first roll from my Diana. Stay tuned later in the week I will be posting my first venture into the Diana Mini world.

I am now half way through the photo a day for March. I have noticed my photos for the last few days have been very food orientated. But anyway I hope you are enjoying the photos.

Week in Review

Photo of the day for Tuesday was taken of our "Happy Plant" which was given to us as a house warming present by the previous tenants.

Wednesday I picked up my first roll taken with my new Diana Mini and another roll from a half frame Olympus camera I picked up from ebay (I have had this camera for a while but I had not had the chance to get it developed yet). They seem to have turned out ok by what I can tell by the negatives. I will share the results once I have got my hands on a film scanner.

Thursday, I came home after having my hair done to a bunch of beautiful red roses from my bf.

Friday, I caught up with some great friends and went to an art opening at ACCA. The exhibition is New11 features works from up and coming Australian Contemporary Artists. If you are in Melbourne it's on until 15 May.

Saturday, the bf and I went to a photographic workshop, which was really informative. This was followed by a BBQ at our place with couple of friends.

Sunday equals lazy day, sleeping in and hanging around the house. This weekend is a long weekend so I don't have the usually Sunday evening feeling of dread. I think another sleep in is called for.

Weekend of Leisure

So I kicked off the weekend with my favourite pizza, florentine ricotta from Crust on Friday night. Then Saturday, headed to my Parent's Chocolate Shop for a quick "quality control" before spending some time with my sister. Saturday was rounded off with a pub meal at the bf old local. Sunday consisted of catching up with a friend for lunch and finished off my first roll of film in Diana Mini. I hope you all had a great weekend.

Cooking for two

Since moving in with my bf, we have been taking it in turns to cook. In the last couple of years I have really started to enjoy cooking, I may not be the best cook but I love finding new recipes to add to my collection. I also find it is sooo much easier to cook for two. In the share house I have lived in before I have generally had to cook for myself, which is hard. I could never really get the quantity right and I would end up with leftovers for days.

Tonight I made vegetable frittata, which turned out quite nicely. I also roasted the remainder of the vegetable that didn't fit in (what was I saying about the quantity) for lunch or dinner tomorrow. I found a great recipe for a basic frittata mix if you are interested.

I saw the chair sitting by the computer and thought that it would by the focus of today's photo of the day. I feel like I spend most of my time sitting down in front of a computer. I spend 8 hours a day staring at an inanimate object just to come home and do the same thing (not always). I guess I just which I could turn off/disconnect and relax. All in all it's just another day.

First day of March

So day one of March. Shot of the day my venetian blinds. My inspiration came from light coming from the other side. In the end I put on the flash and I got a shot that I was pleasantly surprised with.

New Inspiration

So at the moment I have been looking for new inspiration. Last year I commenced and disbanded a 365 Project, and I think I may need to start a slightly smaller project because I enjoyed making time each day to take a photo and looking back there were some photos that I was extremely proud of (and some that I wish I could just delete and eraser all memory of them). So I am thinking for the month of March I am going to challenge myself again to take a photo a day and see what I can produce. I think it will be a great thing for me to do to find some inspiration and I am looking forward it.

In other news I am pretty excited I recently added to two more toy cameras to my collection and I have already taken them out on a photo trip, which is pretty exciting.

I can't believe we are half way through February. Things I am looking forward to:

Diana World Tour coming to Melbourne later this month.
Trip to Sydney we are planning.
Hopefully finishing my degree in June (yay!).
Getting my Diana film developed (finally).
Spending time working on my blog.
My mum's birthday.

The list is not as long this time around and think that's mainly because I things have settled down over the last couple of months.

Photo tripping

I have had an interest in photography for a long time. Although there have been times when that interest has waned a little. It is something that has become a big part of my life, from taking happy snaps to trying to see the world in a new perspective.

Through my interest my boy has now picked up the photography bug. So it has become something special that we can do together. Our styles are very different, he is very technical in terms of aperture, white balance etc. whereas I generally like to just point and shoot.

As I have mentioned I spent two weeks in South Africa at the end of 2010. While I was visiting I spent a couple of days in Kruger National Park, it really was amazing! So I thought I would share a couple of shots.

In the middle of nowhere

On a trip home from Mildura a little while ago we stopped off at a salt lake. I had taken this shot of the coca cola can as I had found it to be quite peculiar because of the location. Clearly it's out of place, but nature is taking some revenge on this particular can.

The end of a great year!

I am certainly going to miss 2010. So many positive things happened in my life this year. I was inspired to share my list by Here Comes the Sun and See Hear Say, two blogs I have really enjoyed following this year.

So here is my list of highlights for 2010:

Attending the Weddings of two of my best friends and my brother. Love was differently in the air in 2010.
Spending two weeks in Germany travelling with friends (and attending a wedding) and a week travelling around other parts of Europe by myself.
Travelling by myself because it was a surprise to me that I could actually handle it.
Setting up house with my lovely bf.
Spending good times with my friends
Getting closer to finishing my degree (one more subject to go next year!). I successfully completed two units this year, which I don't think I would have been able to do with out the encouragement of my bf.
Got over half way through my 365 project. Although I ~~failed~~ decided it had reach the end, I did enjoy it, especially know looking back on the photo I had taken. Next year I am hoping to focus a little bit my energy on improving my photography than I have in the last couple of months.
Last but by no means least, spending two weeks in South Africa. It was a amazing experience! I went on Safari, visited wineries, went to top of table mountain, and I got to meet my bf's family and friends. Little bit disappointed I wasn't able to try the infamous bacon and banana pizza though.

Here is my list of some things I am looking forward to in 2011:

Finishing before mentioned degree.
Welcoming my little niece/nephew into the world.
Figuring out what I want to do when I grow up or at least finding something I am really passionate about.
Picking up some new hobbies/projects.
Learning how to be a better cook.
Saving for my next big adventure!

I am looking forward to seeing what will be install for me in 2011.

A concoction of things

So this year my effort for the Canon Photo5 competition was pretty dismal. I managed to enter just one of the briefs, and that was a bit of a laboured effort in itself. The above photo was the photo I entered. It was a concoction of red wine, oil and little bit of cordial. I thought it made for a pretty intriguing pattern.

Canon Photo 5 2009

Since it is the start of October I think it would be a great time to start looking forward to the next couple of months.

I am looking forward to:

Canon Photo5 competition. I have my thinking cap well and truly on and I am ready for the challenge. Photo above taken from my last year's entry, this particular brief was bokeh.
Getting my Diana film processed.
The warmer weather. Spring is my favourite season. I love Melbourne when the sun is shining.
The wedding of two lovely people. So exciting.
Spring Racing Carnival - Country Races and maybe even the Cox Plate.
Getting closer to finishing my degree.
To welcoming home my friends who have been travelling around Europe.
Trip to South Africa with my bf.
Moving in with my bf (maybe not the actually packing and moving part).

I have so much to look forward to some little things and some pretty big things. I have decided I am going to start doing a regular post on things I am looking forward to. I am also think I am going to start changing other things about my blog especially now that I am no longer doing my 365 Project.
